Marrakech is a city of contrasts — calm and chaotic, traditional and modern, earthy and luxurious all at once. I am very thankful I had the opportunity to visit this place! Here are seven things you should not miss when visiting this vibrant city:
1. Discover the Atlas Mountains
This was my favorite day. Escape the city and head toward the breathtaking Atlas Mountains, just a short drive from Marrakech. The scenery changes dramatically as you leave the city behind — winding roads, waterfalls, and picturesque Berber villages appear along the way. Many tours include a traditional home-cooked meal with a local family, making the experience even more special.
2. Experience a Desert Safari
An excursion into the desert is one of the most iconic experiences in Morocco. Whether you choose a quad bike ride, jeep tour, or camel trek, the golden sand dunes offer a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Many desert tours include sunset views, traditional music, and Moroccan dinners under the stars.
3. Wander Through the Medina and Souks
The heart of Marrakech lies in its historic Medina. Here, you’ll find endless stalls selling spices, handmade lanterns, colorful textiles, leather goods, and ceramics. The souks can be overwhelming at first — but embracing the chaos is part of the fun.
4. Dine on Rooftops with a View
Rooftop dining in Marrakech is a whole experience in itself. From sunrise breakfasts to sunset dinners, these terraces offer stunning views over the Medina, minarets, and distant mountains. Enjoy traditional tagine, mint tea, or fresh orange juice while soaking in the atmosphere.
5. Visit Historic Mosques, Palaces & Madrasas
Marrakech historic mosques, palaces, and madrasas are just breathtaking. Admire the detailed mosaic tiles, carved wood, and elegant courtyards that reflect Morocco’s rich history and spiritual culture.
6. Visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is a must-visit. The exhibitions celebrate the designer’s deep connection to Morocco through fashion, color, and culture. Even non-fashion lovers will enjoy the beautiful design of the building itself.
7. Relax at Jardin Majorelle
Right next door to the YSL Museum lies Jardin Majorelle, one of Marrakech’s most beloved attractions. Its vibrant blue buildings, exotic plants, and water features create a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of the city.
